Mariposa Gardening

About Us

Andrea Hurd, Owner
Since 1990 I have been gardening professionally.  Over the years my love for the natural world has influenced the way I design.  With an eye toward creating a naturally peaceful and beautiful gardens, the landscapes I create with my team are also customized to meet the needs of each client.  Incorporating a passion for dry-laid stone walls and patios, the gardens that we design and build are long lasting and provide many ecological benefits to our urban areas.

Melissa Hardy, Bookkeeper
For several years, I’ve worked as a bookkeeper for small to mid-sized green businesses around the Bay Area. During the summer of 2008, I came on as the bookkeeper for Mariposa Gardening and Design. I bring expertise in bookkeeping to our team, along with a passion for maintaining healthy eco-systems.

Liz Tilley, Design Associate
Over the last decade I have designed all manner of things; hats, furniture, ceramics, clothes, accessories, and textiles.  Now, merging my love of the environment with my design skills, I am designing gardens with Andrea and her team. Together, we design beautiful gardens that preserve bio-diversity and increase urban habitat.

Gabe Thoma, Crew Leader
I’ve been working in gardens my entire life.  All through school I worked for my mom’s small gardening business, assisting her in planting and weeding.  Now as the Crew Leader for Mariposa Gardening and Design, I get to use my skills in garden installation, irrigation, and masonry to build beautiful, ecologically beneficial landscapes for clients all over the Bay Area.

Music is an art form whose medium is sound organized in time. A garden can be like music, a symphony whose medium is life organized in blossoms and leaves. This sweet spot where art collides with ecology is Mariposa Gardening & Design’s inspiration. We have spent over 15 years in careful observation of a garden’s natural systems and rhythms. Our design process was developed to support or re-establish the intricate web of systems that allow native ecosystems to thrive while at the same time drawing on the elegance and grace of natural materials to create a garden oasis that truly sings with life.
