Handmade Knee Pots & Stone Seed Pod Sculptures
Handmade Knee PotsAs a teenager, Andrea Hurd worked with her father in his pottery studio. One technique she learned from him was how to make knee pots. Clay is formed over the knee, giving the piece an organic quality. Andrea's knee pots are artful as well as useful. Delicate and gorgeous, they can be used as vases for flower arrangements, serving dished for chopped herbs or table bowls for salt. Knee pots are also practical in your garden. They serve beautifully as a water source for butterflies and other beneficial insects such as dragonflies. Place stones and pebbles in the knee pots and then fill with water. Distribute them around the garden and butterflies, dragonflies and other pollinators will drink from them.

Stone Seed Pod SculpturesThe Stone Seed Pod sculptures and fountains that we create at Mariposa are made of dry stacked stone, built using no mortar or glue. The Seed Pod sculptures are either stacked roughly or hand cut with a grinder and sanded to shape. The dimensions of each of the Seed sculptures are set according to the Golden Mean proportions. The Golden Mean is a mathematical proportion, found all over in nature, in seeds, in shells, in eggs, in flowers and in trees. The Golden Mean proportion has been replicated in ancient and modern architecture, giving grand structures, such as the Pantheon in Greece, their simplistic connection to nature.
