Events and Workshops

The Art and Science of Lithohydrology

How to use dry laid stonework to harvest water in your garden.
Date and Time:
Sat, March 28, 2020
10:00 AM – 12:00 PM PDT
Cost: free!

Lithohydrology is the use of dry-laid stones and stone features to harvest rainwater from impermeable surfaces (including hardscaped paths and driveways, roofs, and other areas). The water is directed back onto the property where it waters trees and replenishes the groundwater table. Lithohydrology allows us to maintain the health of trees and larger shrubs in times of drought, reduces our water bill, and provides benefits to the larger ecosystem around us by supporting the health of the water cycle in our region.

Taught by Andrea Hurd of Mariposa Gardening & Design Cooperative, Inc. In this workshop, you will learn some of Mariposa’s innovative water harvesting methods, which use stone to capture and store water on the landscape. From pictures to discussion, we will tackle the basics of this important part of building gardens that keep natural systems in mind.

Bringing Back the Natives Garden Tour

Date and Time:
Sun, May 3, 2020
10:00 AM – 4:00 PM PDT
Cost: the tour asks for a donation of $15.00; cost of tour guide is $10.00

The Bringing Back the Natives Garden Tour will take place on Sunday, May 3, 2020, with 40 beautiful native plant gardens and a. number of native plant nurseries participating. Two of Mariposa's gardens are featured on the tour this year:

Gary and Jamie Bramwell's Garden features a spectacular, sinuous, dry-stacked Connecticut bluestone and Arizona flagstone retaining wall that shelters a meadow of sun-loving, low-growing sedges and grasses.

Carolyn Rosway and Scott Flicker's Garden:  A dry-stacked flagstone stairway wends through this rambunctious cottage garden, from the meadow on the sunny hillside down to the shady canopy of a stately redwood.  Andrea Hurd will give a talk on "Brick mounds, and how to build butterfly meadow gardens” at 2:30.

There's no better way to learn about the beauty and value of native plants than this tour.  We hope to see you there!
